Did you know the average heart beats around 100,000 times a day? In this session, we will step into the shoes of an Interventional Cardiologist—a special type of heart doctor. Learn about how the heart works, and practice doing a life-saving procedure that Interventional Cardiologists use to unblock important blood vessels that keep the heart alive!

Expert: Dr. Alexandra Bastiany is Canada’s first Black woman Interventional Cardiologist. She earned her MD and completed her Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at the Université de Montréal (UdeM), where she graduated with honours and became UdeM Faculty of Medicine’s first Black valedictorian. After completing her fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the University of Alberta, she now works in Thunder Bay, Ontario. She has a passion for community work and is dedicated to reducing race and gender biases in healthcare.
