New Video Series takes Viewers Off Limits to exciting STEM Locations

Featuring women, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming STEM role models with scientist host, Dr. Larissa

June 29, 2022 (Toronto, ON) – The Canadian Association for Girls in Science (CAGIS) is thrilled to launch OFF Limits a new YouTube video series that takes viewers behind-the-scenes to exciting locations with inspiring STEM role models. As part of CAGIS’ 30th anniversary celebrations, this series will be paired with fun, nation-wide STEM challenges for girls, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming youth.

In each video, Dr. Larissa brings viewers to a new unauthorized access point. From riding the Yukon Striker at Canada’s Wonderland with a mechanical engineer, tasting astronaut food at the Canadian Space Agency, or putting out fires with a firefighter, viewers go off limits and get to meet inspiring women, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming engineers, trades people, and scientists along the way.

“If you have ever wondered what lies behind the door that says Do Not Enter, or what happens if you press the big red button, this series is for you. We’re going behind-the-scenes to see cool places, learn new skills, and meet amazing people,”  says Dr. Larissa Vingilis-Jaremko, CAGIS Founder and President.

Children’s exposure to stereotypical images of STEM professionals plays a strong role in shaping their perceptions and their interest in entering STEM fields. Fortunately, research has shown that providing children and teens with diverse role models, such as those in OFF Limits, has a powerful impact.

The videos will be released monthly on CAGIS’ YouTube channel with the first in the series, OFF Limits: Riding Roller Coasters, launching on July 6, 2022. Girls, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming youth are invited to watch the video as a point of inspiration before completing the hands-on challenge at home. More details about how to enter the challenge will be available at www.GirlsInScience.ca as of July 6, 2022.
